The Brucato's are Off to Paris and Tunisia!

Hello!

We are off next week -- November 5th -- for Paris and Tunisia, returning home November 21st.  This will be an interesting route, as we are flying Phoenix to Salt Lake City and then from there to Paris on Delta Airlines.  We've never transitted through SLC before, so it will be an interesting experience!  

We stay in Paris for three nights before we head to Tunis via Air France for ten nights in Tunisia.  We will be picking up a car there and after a few days in Tunis, will be heading south ... as per usual, we will be visiting lots of Punic (ie. Phoenician) and Roman ruins and museums, which is our primary interest.  We will also be staying at a desert oasis in Tozeur, but unfortunately, for all the Star Wars fans, we probably won't be seeing any of the sites for which Tunisia starred in many of the movies.  (Sorry...!)  We will definitely be passing through some of the very memorable WWII sites from the Tunisian campaign as well, and after reading Saul David's "Tunisgrad" book, those will definitely be photographed as well.



Finally, we will be returning via Paris for a couple of nights before heading home on the 21st.  

So!  Hoping you will join us on our latest adventure, and if you have any suggestions for places to see, or things to eat, please be sure to let me know!  We are always interested in good advice!

Always Fun to Go, but Great to get HOME!

  We’re back in Tucson, after a very  l-o-n-g  day!  To recount!   Up Friday morning about 4:30 am to get our shuttle to the airport (CDG) at 6 am.  Showered, downstairs and checked out by 5:45 am – in fact, while reception is open 24/7, it really isn’t … or only sorta…I think we woke up the poor night manager, as he was in his t-shirt, sweat pants and slippers.  It was totally dark downstairs and the trashcans were at the door waiting to be taken out!  At any rate, soon lights were on, we were checked out, and our shuttle came a bit early.   Very easy ride to CDG, and we were there about 6:35 am.   Delta Airlines  desks were open and our bags were tagged (while I definitely go carry-on whenever possible, on the way home, my feeling is, if it gets there, it gets there … and I never put anything in a suitcase that I will regret losing anyway!)  But on the way home, all bets are off; the plane can sc...

We made it to Paris!

  We picked up a rental car at Tucson airport about noon on Tuesday, (cute little Nissan) and returned home to drop off our car.  Loaded up the rental and were on our way about 1:30 pm.  Actually not too much traffic, which was nice, and we reached the DoubleTree Phoenix Airport (our favorite airport hotel) about 3:30.  Got settled in our suite, only to discover that Caltech’s observing partner in China had FINALLY come in with their requests for observing time while we were making our way north – giving  R  plenty to do.  Fortunately,  R  was able to get in a few hours on the project both before and after dinner with the result that he felt very good getting on the airplane on Wednesday.   We had dinner at the hotel’s restaurant  Brix , which, while rather pricey, offers some very good options!  In this case, I had their  Brix   burger  with cheese and bacon, and it was excellent! ...

No more CAR!

  Now I have to admit that our Volkswagen Jetta was truly a delightful vehicle – except, of course, for the trunk lid … but that notwithstanding, our little VW drove beautifully, I  SOOO  enjoyed the manual transmission, and it was an amazing way to experience Tunisia.  That all being said, I have to admit that I was rather relieved to drop it off successfully this afternoon at the airport … and it was a great thing that we did, too!  We have never really come across an airport before that had absolutely  NO  “RENTAL CAR RETURN” signage.  And of course, I hadn’t asked when we picked up the car!  I guess I just figured that when we needed to know, it would be there!  WRONG!     So … to start with the day.  We were up about 5 am, and down to breakfast about 8.  As the first site we were going to was only about an hour’s drive away, and we didn’t want to arrive too early,  R ...
